Whether or not the fact that Heath Ledger's untimely death has influenced the hype around this movie doesn't really matter. Simply put, Ledger put in an epic performance as The Joker that will be remembered as one of the best portayals of a villain in the history of the big screen.

"Wanna know how I got these scars?...."
Michael Caine's agely wisdom fit the character of Batman's behind-the-scenes sidekick and butler, Alfred, perfectly.

"You can be the outcast. You can make the choice that no one else will face-- the right choice. Gotham needs you."
From the bank robbing scene that opened the movie to the final cut of Batman riding into the night on his suped-up speedbike, The Dark Knight left me desiring nothing... except of course another sequel.
Harvey Dent's tranformation into "Two-Face" in the final quarter of the movie suggests that perhaps Two-Face will serve as the villain in the series' next edition.

"You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain"
